SAR measures CPU activity, memory paging, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxcloudvps.com\/blog\/troubleshooting-common-website-issues-on-linux-server\/\" title=\"\">network issues<\/a>, process and thread allocation, etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>It collects data every 10 minutes and it gathers in the <b>\/proc<\/b> filesystem. In this blog post, we will use the Ubuntu 22.04 as OS. You can choose any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/best-linux-desktops-for-beginners\/\" title=\"\">Linux distro<\/a> you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Installing SAR on Ubuntu 22.04 is a straightforward process; installation and configuration may take up to 10 minutes. Let&#8217;s get started! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prerequisites<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A server with Ubuntu 22.04 as OS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>User privileges: root or non-root user with sudo privileges<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1. Update the System<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We assume that you have a fresh installation of Ubuntu 22.04. That&#8217;s why we need to update the package to the latest versions available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">sudo apt-get update -y &amp;&amp; sudo apt-get upgrade -y<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2. Install SAR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The SAR package is, by default, included in the <b>sysstat<\/b> package. To install SAR execute the following command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">sudo apt-get install sysstat<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Once installed, start and enable the service:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">sudo systemctl enable sysstat &amp;&amp; sudo systemctl start sysstat<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Check if the service is up and running:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">sudo systemctl status sysstat<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>You should receive the following output:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">root@host:~# sudo systemctl status sysstat\n\u25cf sysstat.service - Resets System Activity Logs\n     Loaded: loaded (\/lib\/systemd\/system\/sysstat.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled)\n     Active: active (exited) since Fri 2023-09-08 09:37:51 CDT; 1min 20s ago\n       Docs: man:sa1(8)\n             man:sadc(8)\n             man:sar(1)\n   Main PID: 8753 (code=exited, status=0\/SUCCESS)\n        CPU: 18ms\n\nSep 08 09:37:51 host.test.vps systemd[1]: Starting Resets System Activity Logs...\nSep 08 09:37:51 host.test.vps systemd[1]: Finished Resets System Activity Logs.\n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3. Enabling SAR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After installation, SAR is not enabled by default. To enable it open the <b>\/etc\/default\/sysstat<\/b> file with your favorite editor and modify it to look like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">#\n# Default settings for \/etc\/init.d\/sysstat, \/etc\/cron.d\/sysstat\n# and \/etc\/cron.daily\/sysstat files\n#\n\n# Should sadc collect system activity informations? Valid values\n# are \"true\" and \"false\". Please do not put other values, they\n# will be overwritten by debconf!\n<b>ENABLED=\"true\"<\/b>\n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Save the file, close it, and restart the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">sudo systemctl restart sysstat<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>As we mentioned in the lead, the SAR collects data every 10 minutes. This can be checked and confirmed in the <b>\/etc\/cron.d\/sysstat<\/b> file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">root@host:~# cat \/etc\/cron.d\/sysstat\n# The first element of the path is a directory where the debian-sa1\n# script is located\nPATH=\/usr\/lib\/sysstat:\/usr\/sbin:\/usr\/sbin:\/usr\/bin:\/sbin:\/bin\n\n<b># Activity reports every 10 minutes everyday<\/b>\n5-55\/10 * * * * root command -v debian-sa1 &gt; \/dev\/null &amp;&amp; debian-sa1 1 1\n\n<b># Additional run at 23:59 to rotate the statistics file<\/b>\n59 23 * * * root command -v debian-sa1 &gt; \/dev\/null &amp;&amp; debian-sa1 60 2\n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4.
